What Your Children May Not Be Telling You…
Your children may not have told you that we have a blog on our website which will share articles describing exciting programs around the camp…I’ll be honest – I’m not sure what a blog is – but I do know that you should know…
LAND SPORTS
Hopefully by now you know that we are blessed to have a brand new sports field called Migrash Sarah. This new centerpiece of camp is solving a longstanding problem we’ve had with drainage of rain water. It is also providing a state of the art sports complex complete with a soccer field (also used a lot for ultimate Frisbee and football games), beach volleyball courts, an additional walking/running track, and a proper baseball diamond. Our goal for the next phase is to develop our new central space with trees, another outdoor basketball court and activity hubs.
Campers have a sport period every day except for Wednesdays and Shabbat.
Every two weeks campers are leveled into a sport that they choose. 1 day a week electives are offered (dodge ball, ultimate Frisbee, kickball, spinning, aerobics) and 4 days a week campers work on skills in Hockey, Tennis, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, or Beach Volleyball. Coach Kastner, our Rosh Sport (head of sports), has instituted a new curriculum for our sports program. Campers will earn certificates by showing a proficiency in various skills.
What you may not know is that campers are active even when not participating in their sport period. Campers can be seen running on the track from before kima (wakeup) at 7:30AM until nightfall. Campers play ultimate Frisbee, softball, and soccer during their Peulat Tzrif (cabin activity).
After aruchat erev (dinner) before Peulat erev (evening activity) campers can be seen all over Migrash Sarah tossing balls, shooting baskets, or catching Frisbee, while some are participating in a newly formed indoor basketball league - CRBA – Chanichim (camper) Ramah Basketball Association – consisting of 5 teams made up of campers from our three oldest edot (Nachshonim, Magshimim and Alonim). Games are coached by madrichim (counselors) and our sport staff serve as referees. We hope to broadcast the games on our radio station in the very near future.
We just received our CFL shirts today and will be starting various flag football leagues throughout camp starting this Shabbat. Campers are placed with staff to form teams for RUFFLE (Ramah Ultimate Frisbee League Extreme – not a Hebrew word so it’s not italicized☺). Some staff partake in a daily P90X workout. Many others get exercise at the agam (lake) – but that’s for another article…
