Taking care of your children at camp is a sacred responsibility that we take very seriously. To that end, we are constantly reviewing what we do at camp with regard to camper care and how it can be improved. Currently, we have put in place the following:
1. College Age Staff
Our first-year counsellors and specialty staff are, in general, a year older than the youngest staff at other camps. They have all finished high school and, in many cases, have made plans to leave home for university or other opportunities.
2. Night Coverage
One member of the bunk staff remains in the cabin all night which allows the campers to connect with a familiar face to deal with bedtime routines, nighttime homesickness, and social issues.
3. Parent Liaison (yoatzim)
Our parent
liaisons are adults who are usually parents themselves and have extensive experience in working with children in a variety of settings. Each parent liaison is connected to one or two age groups and provides that extra pair of mature eyes to watch over the campers and serve as support for the counsellors.
4. Social Inclusion
Thanks to a start-up grant from the UJA Federation of Toronto, we are now entering our third year of a three-year implementation of an anti-bullying or social inclusion program which offers both campers and staff a series of practical strategies for resolving conflict and for maximizing social awareness, empathy, and responsibility. We are working with Professor Kim John Payne who has an excellent track record of success in this area.
Our goal is to foster empathy and compassion among campers and staff members, along with a practical understanding of how these feelings can be translated into caring behaviour in the context of everyday life at camp, leading to improving the overall social health of the camp community.
5. Online First-Year Counsellor Training
All first-year counsellors are required to sign up for "Leadership Essentials", an online training course designed by child psychologist Dr. Christopher Thurber. It features 35 videos that teach critical leadership skills every staff member needs in order to effectively deal with intense social, behavioural, disciplinary, and supervisory challenges.
6. First Aid
Our staff is certified each summer for First Aid and CPR. In addition, our tripping staff is trained in Wilderness First Aid.
