STAFF HANDBOOK

CAR REGISTRATION
Only 30 parking spots are available, and will be assigned on a first-come, first- served basis. Staff members wishing to bring their cars to camp must register their car with the camp in writing for safety and insurance purposes. The registration form is on the staff transportation form which you will receive shortly. First year staff (Mador JC's and JC specialists) may not bring cars to camp. The camp retains the right to remove vehicles not registered prior to camp.

NO VEHICLES WILL BE ALLOWED ON CAMP ROADS AT ANY TIME. This is for reasons of safety and aesthetics. A parking lot for staff and visitors is located near the main gate. The camp will not be liable for any damage to private vehicles which occurs on or off camp property. Please return the transportation form as soon as you receive it if you wish to have a vehicle at camp.

DAYS OFF
Each full season staff member will have the opportunity to take up to six (6) designated 23 hour days off during the contract period for the full summer, three (3) days off for July only staff and two (2) days off for August only staff. Days off for counsellors begin after dinner and end before dinner on the following day.

Please Note: It has been our tradition for Junior Counsellors to have their days off on Mondays and Senior Counsellors to have Thursdays off. Exceptions may be made to accommodate camp scheduling. Teachers and specialists generally take their days off on Wednesdays.

DINING HALL
Each meal at Ramah is a wonderful educational opportunity. It is also a time when the safety and comfort of every camper must be carefully guarded. It is important that every staff member, including those not sitting at camper tables, arrive to meals on time, ensure that hands are washed prior to eating, wait until the bracha "hamotzi" is recited before eating, remain silent whenever the leader's hand is raised, ensure that the table is completely cleared, and remain at the table until Birkat Hamazon is concluded. Campers and staff members must remain at their tables unless they are holding their table's tray ("magash") to obtain more food. "Wandering" during meals can be dangerous and will not be permitted.

DRUGS / LIQUOR
Camp Ramah in Canada prohibits the possession, use, or distribution of drugs (marijuana, etc.) at any time during the camp season on or off camp property. Failure to comply is basis for immediate dismissal.

Camp Ramah in Canada also prohibits the possession, use, or distribution of any form of alcoholic beverage at any time during the camp season (unless under circumstances specifically approved by the Camp Director). Failure to comply is basis for immediate dismissal. In addition to these Camp rules, Ontario law states that it is illegal for people under the age of 19 to consume alcohol.

Substance abuse at camp is damaging to our reputation and image in the community - among parents, campers and synagogue leaders. It violates the sacred trust of those who put in our care their most important treasures - their children. Furthermore, it violates the trust campers have in us as role models. In a community like Ramah, there are very few secrets. And there are no secrets in camp that can be kept from the larger Jewish community which we serve.
