STAFF HANDBOOK

NON- BUNK STAFF
Being part of the camp community poses special concerns and issues for non-bunk staff members. It is expected that everyone in camp will live by the camp rules and contribute to the community in camp. There is no such thing as a nine to five job, "I'm not on", or "It's not my job." Being on staff at Ramah means fulfilling many roles, from daily responsibilities, to giving, to participating in activities.
"Live-Ins" are required to:
       • Attend and contribute to morning Tefila
       • Sit with bunk for all meals (space permitting)
       • Be present in bunks for lights out
       • Attend and participate in your edah's activities.

OVERWORKED
Please refer to days off.

PERSONAL PROPERTY
Camp Ramah does not take responsibility for any damage, loss or theft to personal property howsoever caused.

PHONE CALLS IN AND OUT
Please inform your friends and relatives that you CANNOT receive personal calls on the camp telephone other than in the case of emergency.

All outgoing personal phone calls may be placed from the public phones by CREDIT CARD or BELL PHONE CARD only. All other phone companies' cards are probably NOT useable at our pay phones. Please make sure you purchase only a Bell card for use at camp. These are available for purchase once you arrive at camp. The use of cell phones in camp is prohibited.

PRE-CAMP PLANNING
Pre-camp planning will help make your summer more enjoyable as well as add to the experience of your campers. All counsellors will be asked to write a letter to each camper, immediately upon receiving the list of campers. You might plan the letter now so that you can mail it out immediately upon receiving names and addresses. The letter should include some Hebrew terms, bunk goals and projects, a list of suggested items to bring to camp (e.g. posters, books), and of course, something about yourself. Be creative!

The following is a list of suggestions to help you plan for the summer:
1. Gather books, articles, materials, and games which will help you to plan programs at camp.
2. Read some materials about the age group with which you will be working.
3. Define your personal goals for the summer.
4. Define the goals and objectives for your tzrif's experience, or for your particular specialty area.
5. Gather good bedtime stories.
6. Practice your Hebrew by reading newspapers or books for five minutes a day. Review the Ramah vocabulary sheet. Call up your friends and speak in Hebrew!
7. Think about:
     a. Fun things to do on Shabbat.
     b. Fun ways of using and learning Hebrew.
     c. Israel - how can we bring it closer to our campers?
     d. Good ideas for staff programming.
8. Spend some time relaxing and sleeping...to rest up for an exciting summer!!
