STAFF HANDBOOK

Herzl said "If you will it, it is no dream."

REIMBURSEMENT POLICY FOR PURCHASES
I. EXPENDITURES:
Please be advised that ALL expenditures must be approved and authorized prior to purchase via the purchase order system. Receipts must accompany requests for reimbursement and a reimbursement request form must be completed.

II. TRAVEL FOR CAMP BUSINESS:
Personal cars may not be used for camp business (i.e. transport, etc.) without explicit approval of the Camp Director or Business Manager. At no time are campers allowed in staff cars.

SALARIES
Cheques will be issued after all work has been satisfactorily completed, the physical area or residence has been cleaned and inspected, evaluations prepared, inventory counted, a staff check-out form completed, and your supervisor has confirmed that your work responsibilities have been met. Please note: $50 will be withheld from your salary and mailed to you after camp if your living quarters and/or working quarters are not sufficiently cleaned.

In keeping with National Ramah policy, tipping is not permitted. Parents will be notified and encouraged to make contributions in a staff member's name to the Staff Appreciation Fund.

SHABBAT
With sundown on Friday afternoon, the hectic pace of the week is transformed into a serene, spiritual and joyous time for the camp. Staff, as well as campers, observe a traditional Shabbat. All members of the community observe positive commandments, and refrain from writing, using radios, hair dryers, musical instruments, etc. Shabbat is a day of rest for all of us, as well as a day of special programming.

SHMIRAH
Night-time supervision is a critical aspect of staff responsibility. Each staff person will have shmirah duties a number of nights throughout the summer. Shmirah responsibilities must be taken very seriously, as they are necessary for the preservation of a safe and comfortable environment for the entire Ramah community. Every counsellor and live-in cover their cabins at least one night per week.

SLEEP
Going to sleep in a new place demands comfort and trust. Staff members may not do anything which calls this trust into question. Pranks, jokes, abusive behavior, or any actions which might disturb a camper or staff member's sense of trust while asleep are not acceptable. Each night a quieting story or activity should be done to ease campers into sleep.

Staff members need sleep as well. Staff must be awake, alert and responsive to camper needs and other responsibilities throughout each day. Staff, while adults, must therefore abide by the camp's established curfew for going to sleep. Unless it is your evening to cover your cabin during your campers' curfew, you may be around camp until 1:00 a.m. at which time you need to be in your cabin. Please do not put yourself in an uncomfortable position by not following these policies.

SMOKING
Smoking is dangerous to smokers and non-smokers alike. Smoking is also antithetical to the camp environment, and sets a poor example for our campers. All staff are therefore strongly discouraged from smoking at any time, and are prohibited from ever smoking in camp. Exceptions to this policy will be made only in cases of hardship, and only with the express approval of the Director and will be allowed only after 10:30PM, in a designated area, and never on Shabbat.
