Summer '11/ Kayitz '11

MEET OUR HANHALLAH FOR 2011

Shira Goldstein Shira Goldstein- Rosh Edah Nitzanim

My name is Shira Goldstein and I am so super excited to be rosh edah (unit head) Nitzanim (entering 4th and 5th grade) this kayitz (summer)! I was the rosh edah for Nitzanim last kayitz so I can't wait to see some old friends and get to know many new friends! I have been going to camp since Shorashim (entering 3rd grade) so this will be my 15th summer at camp. When I am not at camp, I attend Queen's University and I am looking forwad to entering my final year and finishing up my degree. Until then, I am counting down the days until kayitz 2011!

Machaneh (Camp) Ramah has such a special place in my heart because it has been my summer home for so many years. It is the place where I was able to get an amazing Jewish camping experience and I will never forget all the amazing friends and memories I made at Machaneh Ramah. I feel so fortunate that I am able to contribute to this growth in so many young campers. I am so excited for kayitz 2011 to start. See you soon!!

Nessa Geffen

SYDNEY KAUFMAN - Rosh Edah Arazim

Hi I'm Sydney Kaufman, from Cleveland, Ohio, and I'm so excited to be Rosh Edat Arazim this kayitz. Finishing up a busy year, I cannot wait for my 13th summer at camp. Come the fall, I will be a senior at SUNY Binghamton University studying Human Development. I plan on continuing my education to become a registered dietician with a masters in nutrition.

I'm passionate about camp and Judaism after spending a year abroad in Israel post high school. I come from a family of Ramaniks, and ecstatic about continuing the experiences within the Ramah community. I cannot wait to meet everyone and get into the swing of kayitz 2011!

Aily Leibtag

Aily Leibtag - Rosh Edah Kfirim

Hi, my name is Aily Leibtag. This will be my 13th kayitz at Camp Ramah and I could not be more excited about spending it with Edaht Kfirim! I am about to graduate from McGill University in June and I will be spending next year working in Toronto in the Jewish community. As excited as I am to begin this next chapter of my life, camp has always been a second home for me and I can't wait to get back to it. This will be my second summer as a Rosh Edah and I believe that we have an incredible summer ahead of us. Some of my favourite things to do at camp include swimming in the agam, going to amanut (arts and crafts) and doing shira (singing). I am looking forward to having an amazing summer with all of you and am counting down the days until Kayitz 2011!

Josh Goldberg Michael Chaikof - Rosh Edah Tzirim

Hi Edat Tzirim! My name's Michael, though most people at camp just call me "Chaikof", and I'm really excited to be your rosh edah this summer! I am just finishing up my third year at the University of Toronto, where I am majoring in Immunology and Neuroscience. I lived in residence at U of T this year, and in my spare time, I love singing with my acapella group, the Varsity Jews.

This summer will be my thirteenth at Ramah (I've been a Ramahnik since I was in Shorashim!), and I'm so excited to spend it with a new group of chanichim. I've been a madrich for the last three summers, but I can't wait to be a part of hanhallah, especially because I get to work with such a great edah. I'm counting down the days until I see you all at the machane and we can kick off the amazing summer that I know we will all have together! See you all soon!

Jeremy Pappas Susan Schwartz - Rosh EdaH Nachshonim

Hi, my name is Susan Schwartz and I will be rosh edah Nachshonim this kayitz! I recently graduated from Wellesley College outside Boston, MA with a BA in economics. I am originally from Bloomfield, MI and spent 9 years at Ramah as a camper, and 3 years on staff. After spending last summer away from camp (my first in 12 years!) I cannot wait to get back! I'm really looking forward to having a safe, sunny, fun summer together before I head off to Israel for the year. See you soon!

Jennifer Beitner

Nessa Geffen - Rosh Edah magshimim

Hi everyone! My name is Nessa Geffen, and I am going to be Rosh Edah (unit head) MAGSHIMIM (entering 10th grade) this kayitz (summer)! I am extremely excited for kayitz 2011, as it will be my sixth year on staff, and my 13th kayitz at camp all together. Last kayitz I was the Rosh Edah Arazim (entering 6th grade), and for my first four years on staff I was a counselor for all of the oldest Edot except Magshimim! I was born and raised in New York City, and am currently finishing my last semester at Hunter College in New York where I will be graduating with a BA in both Music and Jewish Social Studies.

I hope to pursue a Masters Degree in Jewish Studies in the near future, and eventually a career within the Jewish community. Machaneh (camp) Ramah gave me the opportunity and tools to discover my personal connection to Judaism as well as my Jewish identity. My goal on staff has always been, and will continue to be as a second year Rosh Edah, to give back to my campers what I was so lucky to get out of the Machaneh. Kayitz 2011 is getting closer by the minute and I cannot wait to be back at the Machaneh for yet another amazing two months--let the countdown begin!

Adam and Casey Green

Adam and Casey Green - Tikvah Directors

Adam and Casey Green are looking forward to their third summer as Tikvah Directors at Camp Ramah Canada. Adam spent many summers at Ramah, both as a camper and on tzevet, and Casey worked on staff at other camps, and in summer as well as year long programs in Israel. When not at camp, Casey's background is in special needs, having worked at the Muki Baum Centre and at the Geneva Centre for Autism. Currently, she teaches in the Toronto District School Board. Adam works as an Social Worker at the Griffin Centre, working with teenagers with Dual Diagnosis, and also counselling in the larger community.

Aaron Silver

JOEY EISMAN- Rosh Edah Alonim

Hi, my name is Joey Eisman and this kayitz (summer) I will be Rosh Edat Alonim. I recently graduated from the University of Michigan and received a BS in Neuroscience with an emphasis in Endocrinology. This past year I lead my university's Relay For Life, which is the major facet of fundraising for the American Cancer Society. We raised over $320,000 for cancer research, placing U of M top 5 in the nation. This will be my 5th year on staff. I have worked on tzevet (staff) Nachshonim in 2007 and Alonim for two years in 2008 and 2009. Last year, I was Rosh Edat Shorashim at the end of the summer. I am very excited to return to camp in my new role and bring my ruach(spirit/energy). I hope to make this kayitz memorable and fun for the entire macheneh (camp)!

Jacob Gallinger

Jacob Gallinger - Rosh Agam

Shalom Camp Ramah! My name is Jacob Gallinger and I will be the Rosh Agam (head of the waterfront) for Kayitz 2011. This summer will be my third as Rosh Agam and I am really looking forward to getting the ball rolling once again. I recently graduated McGill with a BA in psychology and am planning to pursue a masters/PHD degree in the future. For the past 6 months I have been working in three research labs as well as filling in for our Assistant Camp Director, Ariella Moss Peterseil, who is on maternity leave until camp begins.

This summer I hope to ensure another safe experience for all of our campers and staff who spend the summer on our gorgeous Skeleton Lake. While safety is always my number one concern around the water, it is also important to me that our campers develop a strong waterfront skill set and a passion for the many amazing water activities that are offered at Camp Ramah in Canada. If I can give back to our campers what our camp has given to me, this summer will be a great success! See you on the water!

Jacob Gallinger

JEREMY PAPPAS- PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Shalom! My name is Jeremy Pappas and I will be the Program Director for Kayitz 2011, my 17th kayitz! You may ask, what exactly does the Program Director do? The answer is simple: a lot! I will be working with chanichim (campers) creating va'adot (committees), helping train our incredible tzevet (staff), and making sure that camp has the best day-to-day program possible. If you have ideas, suggestions or thoughts, please let me know. When not thinking about camp, I'm busy being a rabbinical student in New York, and somehow finding time to cheer on the Michigan State Spartans and Pittsburgh Steelers

Steven Kastner

CHANIE ANTFLECK - Rosh Sports

My name is Chanie Antfleck and I'm so excited to be returning for my 10th summer at camp, and 4th year on staff, this time as Rosh Sport! In the fall, I'll be starting my last year in kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University. In my little spare time, I can be found on the basketball court or on the field in warmer weather. With the new Migrash Sarah being just 1 year old, I'm so excited to get out and play sports with all of you! See you soon... and don't forget your running shoes!

Zack Silverberg Zack Silverberg - Logistics Coordinator

Shalom! My name is Zack Silverberg and I will be reprising my role as Logistics Coordinator again this kayitz 2011. I am very excited to be spending my 13th summer at camp. This will be my fifth summer on staff and my second as a member of Hanhallah. For the past four years I have been studying History at the University of Western Ontario and next year I will be attending Law School at Western.

When I am not doing school work, I find myself engaged in charity work, involvement in various campus clubs and councils, and spending time with my friends. Camp is a unique opportunity to explore all aspects of your personality and is a great chance to grow. I appreciate every second that I am able to spend at Ramah and hope to pass my passion on to others this summer.

Stay classy Camp Ramah!
